Croyde

These drawings represent a proposal to replace an existing hotel with a contemporary example on a dramatic site above the rocky coastal slope in Croyde, North Devon, currently submitted for planning. The site is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty adjoining a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).  It also falls within the Voluntary Coastal Conservation Area and the World Biosphere Reserve.

The proposal has been designed to minimise its impact on the coastline by building the bulk of the accommodation into the land utilising the existing contours on five levels. The sea facing elevation on all five levels will be clad in a stone to closely resemble the rock thus rendering the hotel almost invisible when viewed from across Croyde bay. The entrance courtyard is formed from a vertical garden and the roof combines an extensive green roof and photovoltaic panels.

The use of energy saving devices such as solar powered ground source heat pumps, sustainable construction strategies and material choices will create a near carbon neutral hotel.
