Nautilus, Westward Ho!, Devon (completed 2005)

The only building in the Devon and Cornwall region to receive an RIBA Award in 2005, Nautilus set right on the waterfront. It's a 28 apartment development drawing inspiration from the sea and the endless views. The crescent plan is based on a nautilus shell; the roof design embodies the power and movement of the sea; the floor to ceiling window frames the unbroken views to Lundy Island and beyond. But each element has a considered logic – the crescent aided views and phased construction; the roof enables clear stories to draw in southern light; the main windows flood internal spaces with natural daylight and ventilation. Natural materials (copper roof, timber, stone, render, steel and glass) have been used throughout.
