Hammersmith Surgery, London (completed 2001)
Shortlisted for the 2001 Stirling Prize, this NHS surgery personifies the approach of the practice. It is modern and iconic, but personable and of human scale. Set adjacent to the A4 flyover and roundabout, the sculptural shape was conceived in order to soften and enrich its hostile location. With a view that healthcare buildings should use ‘healthy’ materials and energy sources, Sto render, timber, sea green Cumbrian slate floors and copper roofing have been used. With heavy insulation for climate control and acoustic benefits the building maximises natural ventilation and day lighting. The building is flexible enough to accommodate future change of use for retail, cultural or commercial tenants if necessary.
